Poetical Books
A theologically rigorous, book-by-book survey of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon — anchored in Hebrew literary analysis, wisdom theology, and the Christ-centered thread that runs through every page of Israel's devotional literature.

"The Poetical Books are not the margins of Scripture — they are the beating heart of Israel's theology, and learning to read them well will change everything about how you pray, preach, and know God."
— Timothy Atunnise

A note from your teacher
Timothy Atunnise
If you have spent any time in serious Bible study, you already know the feeling — you open Psalm 22 or the speeches of Job, and you sense that something immense and carefully crafted is at work, but the tools you need to fully enter the text are just out of reach. You may know the theology. You may even know the stories. But the literary architecture, the wisdom tradition, the canonical weight — that deeper layer of meaning remains frustratingly close and yet just beyond grasp.
I designed Wisdom & The Word for people who refuse to settle for that partial view. This course is built on the conviction that the Poetical Books are not devotional supplements to the "more important" parts of Scripture — they are a distinct and irreplaceable strand of divine revelation, woven with extraordinary literary craft, theological depth, and messianic purpose. To read them rightly is to see the whole biblical story differently.
What you will find here is not a rapid flyover. We move carefully through each of the five books — Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon — attending to authorship, historical setting, literary structure, and the major theological claims each book makes. We study Hebrew poetry not to accumulate academic vocabulary, but because parallelism, chiasm, and figurative language are the actual vessels in which divine truth has been carried to us. Understanding them changes how you read. And we trace the fear of the Lord as the unifying thread that holds all five books together — not as a slogan, but as a fully worked-out theological vision for how human beings are meant to stand before God.
I am also deeply committed to the Christ-centered reading of these texts, because I believe the New Testament writers demand it of us. The messianic psalms, the suffering servant echoes in Job, the personification of Wisdom in Proverbs — these are not proof-texts to be plucked from context. They are part of a deliberate canonical pattern that the Apostles recognized and that faithful interpreters in every generation have followed. We will follow it together, carefully and honestly.
Whether you are preparing for ministry, deepening your own scholarship, or simply determined to read these extraordinary texts as they deserve to be read — I want to invite you into this work. Bring your questions, bring your hard passages, bring the sermons you are not quite sure how to preach. This course was built to help you with all of it.
Come and read with me.
